Former Chelsea F.C. captain and Spanish defender César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a decorated career that spanned nearly two decades.

The 36-year-old made the announcement through an emotional statement shared on his official X account, confirming that the current season will be his last in professional football.

Azpilicueta described the decision as difficult, saying it was time to begin “a new chapter” after spending years living his dream on the pitch. The veteran defender thanked his clubs, teammates, coaches, supporters, and family for being part of his football journey.

Widely regarded as one of Chelsea’s modern legends, Azpilicueta enjoyed a trophy-filled spell at Stamford Bridge after joining the club from Olympique de Marseille in 2012. During his 11 years with the Blues, he won multiple major titles, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.

The Spanish defender made over 500 appearances for Chelsea and became the first player in the club’s history to win every major trophy available. He also captained the side during one of the club’s most successful modern eras.

Beyond England, Azpilicueta also featured for CA Osasuna, Atlético Madrid and Sevilla FC, while earning more than 40 caps for the Spain national football team and representing his country at multiple FIFA World Cups and European Championships.

Tributes have continued to pour in from football fans, former teammates, and clubs across Europe following the announcement, with many hailing Azpilicueta for his leadership, consistency, and professionalism throughout his career.
