The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed it is preparing for the possible creation of a new $250 banknote featuring President Donald Trump’s face, a controversial proposal tied to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department is conducting “appropriate planning and due diligence” while Congress considers legislation that would allow the unprecedented move.

Current U.S. law prohibits living individuals from appearing on American currency, a restriction dating back to 1866 after Congress passed legislation aimed at preventing personality cults and political misuse of national symbols.

To move the proposal forward, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson introduced legislation that would create an exception allowing current and former presidents to appear on commemorative currency.

If approved, Trump would become the first living person featured on U.S. paper currency in more than 150 years.

Bessent emphasized that the Treasury Department is only preparing in case lawmakers approve the proposal.

“The House and Senate have to do it,” he told reporters during a White House briefing, insisting the final decision rests with Congress.

Reports indicate mock-up designs of the proposed note have already been created, reportedly featuring Trump’s portrait, signature, and branding linked to the U.S. semiquincentennial celebration.

The idea has sparked fierce political debate across the United States.

Critics argue the move would politicize American currency and resemble practices associated with authoritarian governments, while supporters say it would commemorate Trump’s role during the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

Some Democrats have already introduced efforts aimed at blocking Trump’s likeness or signature from appearing on official U.S. currency.

The proposed note is part of a broader push by Trump allies to place the president’s image and branding across commemorative projects tied to America’s anniversary celebrations.

Trump’s likeness has also reportedly been approved for commemorative coins and other federal anniversary materials.

For now, however, the proposal remains dependent on congressional approval, and faces significant legal and political hurdles before any note could officially enter circulation.
