A U.S. federal judge has ordered the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from a program associated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, marking the latest legal dispute involving the administration and one of the nation’s most prominent cultural institutions.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper in Washington ruled that the Kennedy Center cannot be renamed without an act of Congress, ordering the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from the iconic performing arts venue within 14 days. Cooper also directed officials to remove references to a “Trump Kennedy Center” from official materials and blocked plans to temporarily close the center for major renovations

The ruling comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding changes to the leadership and governance of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts following actions taken by the Trump administration earlier this year.

According to court documents, the judge found that attaching Trump’s name to the program violated established procedures and ordered the designation removed pending further legal review.

The case was brought by parties who argued that the naming decision was politically motivated and inconsistent with the institution’s governing rules. Reports indicate the court agreed that the move should not remain in effect while litigation continues.

The Kennedy Center, a federally chartered cultural institution established as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, has become the focus of political controversy since leadership changes were introduced under the Trump administration.

Supporters of the naming decision argued it recognized the administration’s support for arts and cultural initiatives, while critics viewed it as an attempt to politicize a national cultural landmark.

The ruling has renewed debate over the role of politics in federally supported cultural organizations.

Legal experts say the case could have implications beyond the Kennedy Center, particularly regarding how government officials influence naming rights, institutional governance, and public cultural assets.

The decision does not necessarily end the dispute. Lawyers involved in the case are expected to continue legal proceedings, and an appeal remains possible.

For now, however, the court order means Trump’s name must be removed from the contested Kennedy Center program while the matter moves through the judicial process.
