First of Five Men Found Alive in Laos Cave Successfully Rescued
Rescue teams in Laos have successfully evacuated the first of five villagers who were found alive after spending more than a week trapped inside a flooded cave in the country’s central Xaisomboun Province, marking a major breakthrough in a complex international rescue operation.
The men became trapped on May 19 after heavy rains triggered flash flooding and landslides that blocked the cave’s exit. The group had reportedly entered the cave while searching for gold deposits when rapidly rising waters cut off their escape route. Seven villagers were initially reported missing, but rescue divers located five survivors earlier this week on a rocky ledge deep inside the cave. Two others remain unaccounted for.
The first rescued villager was brought to safety on Thursday by specialist cave divers navigating narrow, flooded tunnels under extremely difficult conditions. Rescue officials said the man was weak after more than a week underground but was able to walk with assistance before undergoing medical evaluation.
The operation has drawn support from international rescue teams from Thailand, France, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and other countries. Several divers involved in the mission also participated in the high-profile 2018 Thai cave rescue that captured global attention.
Rescuers described the conditions inside the cave as extremely dangerous, with muddy floodwaters, near-zero visibility, unstable rock formations and narrow passageways complicating extraction efforts. One Australian diver compared the experience to “diving in coffee” because of the thick sediment-filled water.
Authorities temporarily paused rescue operations after the first extraction to assess conditions and prepare for the evacuation of the remaining four survivors. Emergency teams continue pumping water from the cave while monitoring weather forecasts amid fears that additional rainfall could worsen conditions.
The dramatic rescue has sparked memories of the 2018 Thailand cave operation, with experienced cave-diving specialists once again racing against time to bring those trapped safely back to the surface. Rescue efforts for the remaining survivors and the search for the two missing villagers are expected to continue in the coming days.
