A massive manhunt on Hawaii’s Big Island has ended with the arrest of a man suspected in the killings of three elderly men whose deaths shocked residents across the remote Puna district, police said.

Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Jacob Daniel Baker of Pahoa. Police described him as “armed and extremely dangerous” during the search and said he was arrested without incident after law enforcement tracked him to a small cave where he was hiding.

The killings unfolded over a two-day period in the rural eastern part of Hawaii Island. Investigators believe Baker was involved in the deaths of three men aged 69, 69 and 79. One victim was found partially submerged in a cement pond, another was discovered several hundred feet away with signs of blunt-force trauma, while a third victim was found about 19 miles from the other crime scenes.

Police said the first victim, identified as Robert Shine, died from strangulation. Another victim, John Carse, was later identified among the dead. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the name of the third victim pending family notification.

The search operation involved significant state and federal resources, including assistance from the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Homeland Security. Police received a tip that Baker was hiding in a grassy area before locating him concealed inside a cave.

Investigators have not revealed a motive for the killings and say they are still working to determine how the three deaths are connected. However, Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna said authorities are confident Baker was involved in all three homicides.

The case has also drawn attention to reports that two women sought restraining orders against Baker in the days before the killings, citing alleged threats and aggressive behavior. Court requests were reportedly denied due to insufficient evidence.

Residents of the Puna district expressed relief following the arrest after days of fear and uncertainty. The killings have reignited discussions about public safety, law enforcement resources and social challenges in Hawaii’s isolated off-grid communities.

Baker remains in custody on suspicion of murder, burglary and other charges as investigators continue building their case. Authorities have indicated that additional charges could follow as the investigation progresses.
