Police Block PDP Endorsement Rally for Jonathan Following Wike’s Alleged Threat
There was heightened tension in Abuja on Saturday after police operatives reportedly sealed off a venue scheduled for a political endorsement ceremony in honour of former President Goodluck Jonathan under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Security personnel were deployed early in the day to the location, preventing access to supporters, party members, and organisers who had gathered ahead of the planned event. The sudden lockdown sparked confusion and frustration among attendees, many of whom said they had received prior confirmation of the gathering.
The development comes amid rising political friction within the PDP, where internal disagreements and public statements by key figures have continued to generate tension ahead of future party realignments and electoral positioning.
Sources within security agencies said the decision to seal the venue was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent a breakdown of law and order, though no official statement was immediately released detailing the specific intelligence behind the action.
The endorsement event was expected to attract senior party stakeholders, political allies, and supporters of the former president, whose name has repeatedly surfaced in discussions about possible political roles ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Meanwhile, reactions continue to trail comments attributed to Wike, which some political observers say may have heightened sensitivities around the planned gathering. However, neither the FCT Minister nor the PDP leadership has issued a formal response to the venue closure at the time of reporting.
Security presence remained heavy around the area as of press time, with movement restricted and the event effectively suspended.
