The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly begun consultations on the selection of a running mate for the 2027 presidential election, with former Imo State governor Emeka Ihedioha emerging as a leading contender for the vice-presidential slot.

According to reports, discussions within the ADC and Atiku’s political camp have increasingly focused on the South-East region as the preferred source of a running mate, a move party insiders believe could strengthen the party’s appeal ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sources familiar with the consultations said Ihedioha has gained prominence due to his political influence in the South-East and his reported role in mobilizing support for Atiku during the ADC presidential primary election. Party insiders were quoted as saying that the former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives played a significant role in delivering support from the region during the primary process.

The development follows Atiku’s emergence as the ADC presidential candidate after a primary election that was contested by former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Both contenders raised concerns about the conduct of the primary, though Atiku subsequently called for party unity and reached out to Amaechi following his victory.

Speculation had initially linked Amaechi to the vice-presidential position. However, Atiku’s Special Adviser, Paul Ibe, reportedly dismissed claims that the former Rivers governor was under consideration for the role. He confirmed that consultations were ongoing but declined to comment specifically on reports linking Ihedioha to the position.

Political observers note that choosing a running mate from the South-East could be a strategic move for the ADC as it seeks to broaden its electoral base and challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Despite the growing speculation, neither Atiku nor the ADC has officially announced a vice-presidential candidate. Party officials insist consultations are continuing and that a final decision will be made before the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of candidates.
