Nigeria’s Future Lies in Leadership, Strong Institutions and Jobs, Obi Tells EU Parliament
The NDC presidential flag bearer; Peter Obi, has renewed calls for reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s institutions, tackling insecurity, creating jobs for young people and combating corruption during an address at the European Parliament.
Speaking before European lawmakers and stakeholders, Obi stressed that Africa’s development, particularly that of Nigeria, depends largely on the quality of leadership, effective governance and stronger democratic institutions. He argued that Nigeria possesses immense human and natural resources but continues to face challenges stemming from weak institutions, corruption and poor policy implementation.
Obi emphasized the need for policies that encourage economic growth, attract investments and create employment opportunities for millions of Nigerian youths. He maintained that reducing poverty and unemployment would require a deliberate focus on education, entrepreneurship and productive investments rather than reliance on consumption-driven economic models.
The former Anambra State governor also highlighted insecurity as one of the major obstacles to Nigeria’s development, noting that no nation can achieve sustainable progress while citizens live in fear. He called for urgent and coordinated efforts to address security challenges affecting various parts of the country.
During his remarks, Obi urged European leaders and institutions to support initiatives that promote good governance, credible elections and democratic accountability across Africa. He argued that a prosperous and stable Africa would benefit not only the continent but also Europe through stronger economic partnerships and improved regional stability.
According to reports from the event, Obi encouraged Europe to rethink its engagement with Africa, describing Nigeria as a country with enormous economic potential that could serve as a catalyst for broader continental development if properly governed. He noted that Africa’s youthful population represents a significant opportunity for growth if supported by sound leadership and institutional reforms.
The address has generated discussions among Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, with supporters praising Obi’s focus on policy issues such as governance, economic transformation, job creation and security. Critics, however, continue to debate his political prospects ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
