Christian Eriksen Conscious After Collapsing During Denmark-Ukraine Friendly
Danish football star Christian Eriksen is conscious and in stable condition after collapsing during an international friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine on Sunday, an incident that prompted officials to abandon the game.
The 34-year-old midfielder fell to the ground during the second half of the match in Odense, sparking immediate concern among players, officials, and fans. Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch as teammates from both sides formed a protective circle around Eriksen while he received treatment.
In a statement, the Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and “doing well under the circumstances.” The federation subsequently announced that the match had been called off.
According to Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen, Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but regained it quickly. He was able to walk off the pitch and make his way to an ambulance before being transported to hospital for further examination. Boesen added that Eriksen’s implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) appeared to function as intended during the incident.
The collapse brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match at the 2021 European Championship, when he required life-saving CPR on the field before making a remarkable recovery and returning to professional football. Following that incident, he was fitted with an ICD to help regulate his heart rhythm.
Officials said Eriksen will undergo additional medical tests to determine the cause of Sunday’s episode. At the time the game was abandoned, Denmark was leading Ukraine 2-1.
Messages of support quickly poured in from across the football world, with fans, clubs, and fellow players expressing relief that the Danish international was conscious and receiving medical care.
