ADC Settles for Amaechi as Atiku’s Running Mate Ahead of 2027 Poll
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reportedly settled on former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sources within the party disclosed that the decision followed consultations among ADC leaders and key stakeholders after Atiku emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.
According to party insiders, Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his political reach in the South-South region and his perceived ability to strengthen the party’s electoral prospects across several geopolitical zones.
The former Minister of Transportation is also said to enjoy extensive political connections cutting across party lines, including ties with influential figures within the ruling party, a factor party strategists believe could broaden the ADC’s support base ahead of the next general election.
The reported decision comes amid shifting alignments within the opposition camp. Sources cited the reported departure of Peter Obi and many of his supporters from the ADC, a development that has altered calculations within the opposition coalition, particularly in the South-East.
Party officials familiar with the discussions said Amaechi is expected to be formally unveiled in the coming weeks as the ADC intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential contest.
Political observers say an Atiku-Amaechi ticket would bring together two of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures and could reshape the dynamics of the race against the ruling party.
Neither the ADC leadership nor the principal figures involved had issued an official announcement on the reported vice-presidential nomination as of press time.
The development is expected to generate fresh debate within the opposition coalition as parties continue to position themselves for what is likely to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election.
