South Africa’s return to the World Cup stage turned into a humiliating disaster on Thursday, as two red cards and a bizarre broadcast snub sparked a wave of vicious mockery from across the African continent.

Before Bafana Bafana even kicked a ball at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the anger was brewing. South African fans watching at home were left furious after Grammy-winning singer Tyla’s national anthem performance was shown for barely five seconds from a side angle. One fan on X exploded, “WTF, they barely showed Tyla singing!!! We only got one 3sec side view shot of her! Damn!” Another wrote, “That’s it??! Just a side profile of Tyla for 5 seconds. We didn’t even see her outfit.”

The jokes turned savage. Fans sarcastically asked if they had blinked and missed the entire performance. South Africans demanded answers, but the embarrassment was only beginning.

On the pitch, the team crumbled. Bafana Bafana lost 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico, but the scoreline flattered them. Yaya Sithole and substitute Themba Zwane both saw red cards, marking the first time since 2006 that a team has received two reds in a single World Cup match. Former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh delivered a brutal verdict. “South Africa didn’t lose because they are a poor side,” Oliseh said. “They lost because the stage seemed to be simply too big for them.”

Then came the real sting. Instead of continental solidarity, African fans openly cheered against South Africa. The reason was raw and ugly: years of xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant rhetoric in South Africa have poisoned relationships with neighboring nations. One user wrote simply, “A country that deports its neighbors.”

Kenyan commentator Cornelius K. Ronoh poured fuel on the fire. “I never knew South Africa was so hated by other African countries,” he posted. “I witnessed Kenyans celebrate Bafana Bafana’s second red card more than Mexico scoring the second goal. It is boiling nicely!”

Video footage showed Nigerian supporters inside the Azteca Stadium wearing Mexico jerseys specifically to cheer against the South Africans. The mockery didn’t stop at the final whistle. One devastating post read, “The best part about South Africans losing to Mexico is that they can’t do anything to Mexicans living in their country.”

For South African fans, the night was a double humiliation: a fleeting, disrespectful glimpse of their pop star followed by a shambolic defeat and the cold realization that much of Africa was laughing at them. Bafana Bafana now face suspended players, a furious fan base, and a mountain of continental scorn.
