A climber couple has been arrested after allegedly scaling the antenna of New York City’s iconic Empire State Building in what authorities believe was an attempt to stage a dramatic marriage proposal high above Manhattan.

According to law enforcement officials, the pair gained unauthorized access to restricted areas of the landmark skyscraper before climbing onto sections of the building’s antenna structure. Security personnel monitoring the site reportedly observed the individuals ascending the tower and immediately alerted authorities.

The incident unfolded during the early hours of the day, drawing a rapid response from the New York Police Department and emergency personnel. Officers safely brought the climbers down without injury, but both individuals were subsequently taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses related to trespassing and unauthorized access.

Investigators said evidence gathered at the scene; including photographs, video recordings and statements from witnesses, suggests the climb may have been intended as an elaborate marriage proposal. Images circulating online reportedly showed one of the climbers holding what appeared to be a ring box while standing near the antenna structure hundreds of meters above street level.

Authorities emphasized that the stunt created significant safety concerns. The antenna sits atop one of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers, and access to the structure is strictly controlled because of the extreme risks posed by falls, weather conditions and communications equipment located at the site.

Building management condemned the unauthorized climb, noting that the Empire State Building receives millions of visitors each year and maintains extensive security measures designed to protect guests, employees and the landmark itself. Officials stressed that bypassing those protections can endanger not only the climbers but also emergency responders who may be required to conduct rescue operations.

The incident has generated widespread attention on social media, where videos and photographs of the climb quickly spread. While some users praised the couple’s daring actions, many others criticized the stunt as reckless and irresponsible, arguing that it placed lives at risk for the sake of online attention and a dramatic romantic gesture.

Experts in urban climbing, often referred to as “rooftopping,” noted that unauthorized ascents of skyscrapers have become increasingly visible in recent years due to social media platforms that reward dramatic and visually striking content. However, such activities frequently violate laws and can result in serious injuries, fatalities or criminal charges.

The couple’s identities have not been widely released by authorities pending court proceedings. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges could be considered depending on the outcome of the review.

The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, remains one of New York City’s most famous landmarks and a major tourist attraction. The episode has renewed discussions about urban climbing, public safety and the challenges of preventing unauthorized access to high-profile structures in major cities.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and normal operations at the building resumed shortly after authorities secured the area. The arrested climbers are expected to appear in court at a later date to answer the charges filed against them.
