The United States kept its FIFA World Cup dream alive with a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, overcoming a second-half red card to book a place in the last 16 of the tournament. The victory marks the Americans’ first knockout-stage win at the World Cup since 2002 and sets up a highly anticipated clash with Belgium in the next round.

Played before a passionate home crowd in Santa Clara, California, the U.S. controlled much of the contest from the opening whistle. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side created several early chances, with Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman and Folarin Balogun repeatedly troubling the Bosnian defence. Bosnia-Herzegovina struggled to cope with the Americans’ pace and intensity but managed to keep the match scoreless until the closing moments of the first half.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime when striker Folarin Balogun found the back of the net to give the United States a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal was Balogun’s third of the tournament and further cemented his importance to the American attack after an impressive World Cup campaign.

The match took a dramatic turn in the second half when Balogun was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. The dismissal reduced the hosts to 10 men and handed Bosnia renewed hope of mounting a comeback. The decision sparked debate among fans and pundits, with some questioning whether the tackle warranted a red card, while others defended the referee’s interpretation of the laws of the game.

Despite being a man down, the United States refused to retreat. The defence remained disciplined, with experienced centre-backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards helping to repel Bosnia’s attacks, while goalkeeper Matt Freese produced a composed performance whenever called upon. Bosnia enjoyed more possession after the dismissal but struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities against the resilient American back line.

The decisive moment came in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman curled a superb free kick beyond goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to double the United States’ advantage. Tillman, who had earlier assisted Balogun’s opener, delivered one of the tournament’s standout set-piece goals to effectively seal qualification for the co-hosts.

The victory is considered one of the most significant results for the U.S. men’s national team in modern World Cup history. It ended a 24-year wait for a knockout-stage victory and strengthened belief that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could make a deep run on home soil. The Americans have now won three matches at the 2026 World Cup, their highest total in a single tournament.

However, the triumph came at a cost. Balogun’s red card means the striker will be suspended for the Round of 16 encounter against Belgium, depriving the United States of one of its most dangerous attacking players. Pochettino will now have to reshuffle his attack as his team prepares for one of its toughest tests of the competition.

The Round of 16 showdown against Belgium will carry added significance for American supporters, with many viewing it as an opportunity to continue the team’s remarkable run and erase memories of past World Cup disappointments. After displaying resilience, tactical discipline and composure under pressure against Bosnia-Herzegovina, the United States heads into the next round with growing confidence that its World Cup journey is far from over.
