Defending world champions Argentina survived one of the biggest scares of their FIFA World Cup title defence, defeating a fearless Cape Verde side 3-2 after extra time in a dramatic Round of 32 clash at Miami Stadium on Friday night. The victory sends Lionel Messi’s side into the Round of 16, where they will face Egypt after one of the tournament’s most entertaining matches.

Argentina entered the contest as overwhelming favourites, but Cape Verde appearing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, proved they were anything but overawed. The African nation matched the reigning champions for long periods, twice coming from behind and pushing the contest to its limits before eventually falling in extra time.

Lionel Messi once again provided the breakthrough for Argentina. In the 29th minute, the 39-year-old captain expertly controlled a long pass before firing into the roof of the net from a tight angle to give the South Americans the lead. The goal marked Messi’s 20th career World Cup goal and his seventh of the 2026 tournament, further extending his remarkable goalscoring records on football’s biggest stage.

Cape Verde refused to be intimidated. After defending heroically for much of the match, they found a deserved equaliser just before the hour mark through Deroy Duarte, silencing the sea of Argentina supporters inside the stadium and forcing the defending champions into an increasingly tense battle.

The drama intensified in extra time. Lisandro Martínez restored Argentina’s advantage almost immediately after the restart with a powerful finish following another dangerous Messi set-piece. But Cape Verde produced one of the goals of the tournament when Sidny Lopes Cabral curled a magnificent strike past Emiliano Martínez to level the match once again at 2-2, raising the possibility of a stunning penalty shootout.

With penalties looming, Argentina finally found the decisive moment in the 111th minute. Messi’s pinpoint corner found Cristian Romero, whose header deflected off Cape Verde defender Diney Borges and into the net. The own goal ultimately proved to be the winner, ending Cape Verde’s extraordinary resistance and sealing a hard-fought 3-2 victory for the reigning champions.

Despite advancing, Argentina were made to work harder than expected. Messi was named Player of the Match after contributing a goal and playing a central role in both extra-time goals. However, much of the praise after the final whistle went to Cape Verde, whose goalkeeper Vozinha made several outstanding saves; including multiple stops from Messi, and whose spirited display won admiration around the football world.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged the challenge posed by the underdogs, saying the performance proved there are no easy opponents at a World Cup. Messi also praised Cape Verde after the match, admitting his side had expected a difficult encounter and crediting their opponents for pushing the world champions to the limit.

Although Cape Verde’s historic World Cup journey has come to an end, the tiny island nation leaves the tournament with enormous pride after becoming the smallest country ever to reach the knockout stage and coming within minutes of one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. Argentina, meanwhile, march on to the Round of 16, but the thrilling contest exposed vulnerabilities that future opponents will hope to exploit.
