AC Milan have reached a verbal agreement with Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim to become the club’s new head coach, with the former Manchester United manager expected to sign his contract later this week.

According to multiple reports, Amorim has accepted all conditions proposed by the Italian giants and is set to sign a deal running until June 2028, with an option to extend the agreement by a further year until 2029.

The move comes after weeks of speculation over who would replace former Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri following the club’s disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw the Rossoneri miss out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Amorim had accepted Milan’s sporting project and financial terms, leaving only final administrative approvals before the appointment is completed. Several Italian outlets also reported that the club’s ownership has been reviewing the final details before giving formal authorization.

Amorim, 41, has been out of management since leaving Manutd  in January. Despite a difficult spell in England, he remains highly regarded across Europe for his success at Sporting CP, where he won league titles and developed a reputation as one of the continent’s brightest young coaches.

Reports indicate that Milan’s hierarchy considered several candidates, including Oliver Glasner and Matthias Jaissle, before deciding to move forward with Amorim. Former Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimović, who now plays an influential advisory role at the club, is reported to have supported Amorim’s candidacy during the selection process.

Amorim is expected to bring his preferred 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 tactical system to San Siro, a style that brought considerable success during his time in Portugal. Milan supporters will hope the Portuguese coach can guide the seven-time European champions back into the Champions League and restore the club’s status among Europe’s elite.
