From My Window: A Birthday Tribute- At 85, George Izobo Reminds Us That Character Never Grows Old
By Chris Osa Nehikhare
There are birthdays that simply mark the passage of time. Then there are birthdays that celebrate a life so well lived that the years become a badge of honour rather than a measure of age.
Today, I celebrate one such life.
Chief George Izobo, former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), turns 85.
For many, he is an accomplished journalist, a respected union leader and a distinguished elder statesman. For me, he is something even more personal—a friend, a mentor and a man whose life has quietly taught generations that integrity remains journalism’s greatest asset.
The newspaper industry has produced many talented writers and gifted editors. It has also produced a few rare individuals whose greatest legacy lies not merely in the stories they wrote, but in the lives they shaped. George Izobo belongs firmly in that distinguished class.
His leadership of the NUJ came at a time when courage mattered, when journalism demanded conviction, and when the profession relied on men and women willing to defend its independence. He discharged that responsibility with dignity, wisdom and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of a free and responsible press.
Away from the headlines, I have had the privilege of knowing the man behind the public image. His counsel has always been thoughtful, his encouragement sincere and his friendship constant. He has never sought applause, yet he has earned the respect of everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Mentors do not merely teach with words. They teach by example. They demonstrate that humility can coexist with greatness, that influence is best exercised through kindness, and that true leadership is measured not by titles held but by people inspired.
At 85, Chief George Izobo continues to embody those enduring values.
As I look through my window today, I see not simply a veteran journalist celebrating another birthday, but a generation’s compass whose wisdom continues to illuminate the path for those of us privileged to follow.
May Almighty God continue to bless you with good health, strength, peace of mind and the joy of seeing the seeds you planted flourish in the lives of countless journalists and public servants.
Thank you for your friendship, mentorship and example.
Happy 85th Birthday, Chief George Izobo.
May your legacy continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
