FIFA-Badged Nigerian Referee: When A Nigerian Whistle Returns to FIFA Kasimu Abdulsalam Deserves Our Applause — A Pride For The Nation

𝗕𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗸𝘂

For years, I have written about one of the most uncomfortable absences in Nigerian football: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗔𝗙 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀.

The concern was never about sentiment. It was about the public record.

Nigeria could produce players for major tournaments, coaches for national teams and administrators for continental football. Yet when the lists of officials for Africa’s biggest championships and FIFA’s major competitions appeared, Nigerian referees were too often missing.

At the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗼, CAF named 𝟳𝟯 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 — 28 referees, 31 assistant referees and 14 VAR officials. Nigeria had no representative.

Then came the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗽. CAF announced 𝟭𝟵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 selected by FIFA — seven referees, 10 assistants and two VAR officials. Again, no Nigerian appeared.

A 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 (NAN) report dated 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, and carried by multiple online publications, described the AFCON absence as the 𝟭𝟵𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 without a Nigerian referee or assistant referee at the continental championship.

Those were facts worth confronting.

But responsible commentary cannot stop at criticism. If we demand accountability when Nigeria falls short, consistency requires us to recognize achievement when Nigerians begin to break through.

That is why 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺’𝘀 selection for the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗨-𝟭𝟳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗽 deserves our applause.

𝗔 𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗧 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗘𝗧𝗟𝗬

Kasimu’s story did not begin with this FIFA selection.

Nigeria’s 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 international referees list identifies him as 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮 and records that he has been FIFA-listed since 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮.

His progress has been gradual and largely outside the glare surrounding Nigerian football.

While headlines have concentrated on national teams, coaches, administrators and federation politics, referees such as Kasimu have been doing their work quietly — training, passing fitness tests, handling domestic matches and earning increasingly important continental assignments.

At the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗨-𝟭𝟳 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, Kasimu handled several matches before receiving a third-place assignment between 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗴𝘆𝗽𝘁 on 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁.

Major international refereeing assignments are rarely handed out overnight. Officials are watched, assessed and tested before greater responsibility follows.

Kasimu has been quietly building his record.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘 — 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗠

Kasimu has been selected for the 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗨-𝟭𝟳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗽 𝗤𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, scheduled for 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟵 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

FIFA’s official list places him alongside assistant referees 𝗘𝗯𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗘𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻 of Côte d’Ivoire and 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗺𝘂𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 of Rwanda in CAF’s selected group.

The tournament will feature 𝟴𝟭 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 — 27 referees and 54 assistant referees from 36 FIFA member associations.

As of 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, FIFA had not publicly assigned Kasimu to a specific match.

There is no need to exaggerate the achievement.

𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗘𝗧𝗟𝗬 𝗧𝗢𝗢

Kasimu is not the only Nigerian referee whose recent work deserves acknowledgement.

𝗬𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶 𝗘𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘆𝗲 was selected for the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 in Morocco, where she later received the responsibility of refereeing the 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮-𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗶 semifinal.

In the men’s club game, CAF appointed 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗢𝗱𝗲𝘆 𝗢𝗴𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 to referee the 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗮-𝗧𝗣 𝗠𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲 𝗖𝗔𝗙 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 preliminary-round first leg on 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

He worked with fellow Nigerians 𝗧𝗲𝗷𝗶𝗿𝗶 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗶 and 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗷𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗮 as assistant referees, with 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘂 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿 as fourth official.

These appointments have happened without much noise.

𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿. 𝗗𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

Now that their progress is becoming visible, they deserve credit for the assignments they have earned.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

Celebration should not be confused with completion.

Nigeria should not measure refereeing progress by one FIFA youth tournament appointment.

The objective must be a 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

Domestic excellence must lead to CAF youth competitions. CAF assignments should open doors to continental club football. Those opportunities should produce AFCON officials, and sustained performance at that level should create pathways to the FIFA World Cup.

International refereeing has no elevator.

𝗜𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘀.

Fitness. Positioning. Knowledge of the Laws. Communication. Video technology. Temperament. Consistency. Integrity.

And above everything else:

𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁.

One excellent match may earn attention.

Repeated excellence earns responsibility.

𝗔𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲.

𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗔

For those of us who have questioned Nigeria’s refereeing decline, fairness demands that we also recognize progress.

𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.

The purpose of criticism is improvement.

𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺 deserves his recognition.

𝗬𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶 𝗔𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘆𝗲 deserves hers.

And the Nigerian officials receiving important CAF assignments deserve acknowledgement for the work that brought them there.

They have been carrying Nigeria’s name into international assignments, often without the attention given to players, coaches or administrators.

Now their work is becoming visible.

𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁.

This is a proud moment for Nigerian football because referees are part of Nigerian football too.

𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 𝗪𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

When our national teams struggle, we feel it together. When our players succeed abroad, we celebrate together. When our coaches excel, we recognize them.

And when our referees begin rebuilding Nigeria’s presence on CAF and FIFA stages, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦, 𝗞𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗠𝗨

So today, there is no lament.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺.

Go to Qatar and represent yourself with courage and Nigeria with professionalism.

Let your positioning be precise, your judgment calm, your decisions firm and your integrity unquestioned.

You do not carry the responsibility of repairing Nigerian refereeing alone. That task belongs to an entire system.

But carry this opportunity well.

Because progress does not always arrive with speeches, ceremonies or promises.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗿, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.

And then one day, it walks onto the world stage 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱.

For years, Nigerian football asked:

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀?

There was a time when that question hardly needed to be asked.

There was 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗻 “𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆” 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗿𝘂, 𝗠𝗙𝗥, a pioneer who carried Nigeria’s whistle into international football and became the first Nigerian referee accorded international status.

And there was the late 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗷𝗶 𝗢𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲.

𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔-𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗱.

Respected across Africa.

Then came 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟯.

The FIFA World Cup had begun in 𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟬, but more than half a century would pass before a Nigerian national football team stepped onto a FIFA tournament stage.

That year, Nigerian football crossed a frontier it had never crossed before.

The 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀 became the first Nigerian national football team, at any level, to appear at a FIFA tournament, reaching the 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟯 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼.

The team was led on the field by 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗶 𝗝𝗲𝗷𝗲, with 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗸𝘂 as 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻, under 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗲𝘇𝘂𝗲 and assistant coach 𝗜𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗬𝗮𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂.

It was a generation carrying Nigeria into new territory.

But the players were not the only Nigerians making history in Mexico.

𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗢𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲.

He became the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

And his performance carried its own testimony.

Of the three African referees at the tournament, the other two were released after the group stage.

𝗢𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟭𝟮 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀.

That was not sentiment.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱.

Think about what 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟯 represented.

Nigeria had footballers walking onto a FIFA stage for the first time.

Nigeria had a referee walking onto that same stage.

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘆𝘀.

𝗢𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲.

Different responsibilities.

The same flag.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮.

That is why 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺’𝘀 appointment today carries more meaning than one tournament selection.

He is not beginning a Nigerian refereeing story.

𝗛𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

Before him came 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗿𝘂.

Before him came 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗢𝗸𝘂𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲.

Men whose whistles may now be silent, but whose footprints remain on the road Nigerian referees are trying to travel again.

So when Kasimu walks onto the FIFA stage, let us remember the lineage.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗴𝗲.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲.

And then let Kasimu answer the old question with something stronger than words:
