A mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, that left eight people dead has devastated a family and community, with the father of one of the youngest victims describing the suspected gunman as a grandfather who had appeared cheerful and showed no obvious signs of distress.

Julius Windham spoke on Sunday, October 11, while visiting a memorial for his one-year-old daughter, Amarianna, who was among those killed in the October 9 shooting. Also among the victims were the girl’s pregnant mother, her five-year-old son and the unborn baby she was expecting.

Windham said the suspected gunman’s outward behaviour had given little indication of what would happen. He told the Associated Press that the man would smile and appear ordinary in everyday interactions, making the violence difficult to comprehend.

Police said the 45-year-old suspect was related to seven of the eight victims. The remaining victim was a friend of the pregnant woman. Authorities had not publicly released the names of the suspect or the victims in their initial statements.

According to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah, officers responded shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday after a gunshot-detection alert and emergency calls. Investigators later reviewed video and audio evidence that appeared to capture gunfire inside the home before two distressed women arrived, knocked on the door and sought help from neighbours.

Police said the gunman came outside and shot the two women before returning inside. Both were found dead in the yard. Officers subsequently entered the home and discovered the remaining victims, along with the suspected shooter, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities have not established a motive. Chief Lorah said investigators were continuing to speak with relatives and witnesses and examine evidence, including the phones of the two women killed outside the property. He suggested mental health could be a factor but cautioned against drawing conclusions while the investigation remained ongoing.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief. Residents gathered outside the home to leave candles, flowers and stuffed animals in memory of those killed. Windham, wearing a shirt bearing pictures of the slain family members, said he was trying to remain strong for his family and community.

The investigation continues as relatives mourn the victims and authorities work to establish what led to the deadly attack.
