North Korea Tests Strategic Cruise Missiles From Newly Commissioned Naval Destroyer
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test firing of strategic cruise missiles from a newly commissioned 5,000-ton naval destroyer, according to reports by the country’s state media.
The launch, which was carried out as part of a military demonstration of naval strike capability, was reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The agency said the missiles were successfully fired from the warship during exercises aimed at strengthening the country’s maritime defence and strategic deterrence.
KCNA reported that Kim observed the exercise and praised the performance of the naval unit, describing the successful launch as proof of the country’s advancing military technology and combat readiness.
According to the report, the destroyer; recently added to the fleet of the Korean People’s Navy, is capable of deploying various missile systems designed to enhance North Korea’s ability to strike targets from the sea.
The exercise is believed to be part of Pyongyang’s continued efforts to modernize its armed forces and expand its naval capabilities. Analysts say the development reflects North Korea’s growing focus on sea-based missile platforms that could provide greater flexibility for its strategic weapons programs.
The test comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, as North Korea continues to conduct weapons trials despite international sanctions and criticism from the United States and its allies.
Military observers say the latest launch highlights Pyongyang’s determination to advance its weapons systems while projecting strength through publicized demonstrations of its military capabilities.
