A wave of concern has trailed a viral video showing a northern-based Islamic cleric allegedly inciting violence against a Christian pastor over claims of blasphemy.

The cleric, whose identity has not been officially confirmed, had earlier announced a ₦1 million reward for anyone who would carry out the killing of the unnamed pastor. In a subsequent video, he reportedly increased the bounty to ₦2 million, insisting he would not withdraw the offer.

In the footage circulating widely on social media, the cleric is seen displaying bundles of cash while making inflammatory remarks, urging individuals to carry out the act in exchange for financial reward. His comments have drawn widespread condemnation and heightened fears of religious tension, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria.

According to the cleric, he remains resolute in his position, vowing to honour the pledge. The statements, however, have been criticised as dangerous and unlawful, with observers warning that such rhetoric could incite violence and destabilise already fragile interfaith relations.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged blasphemy, including the identity of the pastor and details of the incident, remain unclear as of the time of reporting.

In a reaction captured in the same viral clip, a woman expressed alarm over the development, questioning the silence of security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services. She urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent escalation, warning against what she described as a growing culture of impunity.

She also criticised the cleric’s actions, contrasting the bounty with widespread poverty, including the plight of vulnerable children known as Almajiris, and called for a more responsible use of influence and resources.

Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, calls for restraint, adherence to the rule of law, and peaceful resolution of religious disputes continue to grow.
