Babachir Lawal Quits ADC Over Atiku’s Emergence, Throws Support Behind Tinubu
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawal announced his departure from the party on Sunday, alleging that the presidential primary process that produced Atiku was neither transparent nor credible. He claimed the outcome had been predetermined, insisting that delegates’ votes merely confirmed a foregone conclusion.
The former SGF, who has recently been associated with pro-government political realignments, accused the party leadership of manipulating the process to favour Atiku’s candidacy, describing the development as inconsistent with democratic principles.
He further stated that he could not remain in a political platform he believes is compromised, stressing that his decision was guided by personal conviction and opposition to what he termed “imposed leadership.”
Lawal also launched a sharp critique of Atiku Abubakar, questioning his suitability for the presidency and alleging that his political style promotes division. He maintained that Nigeria cannot afford leadership driven by what he described as entrenched partisan interests.
In a notable political shift, Lawal reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aligning himself with the ruling party’s direction as the political landscape continues to evolve ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers say the development signals fresh realignments within opposition ranks, with potential implications for coalition-building efforts as parties position themselves for the next general election.
The African Democratic Congress is yet to issue an official response to Lawal’s resignation and his allegations regarding the party’s primary process.
