Berlin Pride Attack: Suspect Killed, Investigation Turns to Possible Extremist Network

The man suspected of carrying out the deadly attack near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride celebrations has been shot and killed by German police during an operation in the capital’s Spandau district, bringing an end to an intensive manhunt that followed one of Germany’s deadliest attacks in recent years.

According to German authorities, officers tracked the 21-year-old suspect to an allotment garden complex in Spandau on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the attack. Police said the suspect confronted officers with a bladed weapon during the operation, prompting them to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not reported any police fatalities during the confrontation.

Investigators allege that the suspect drove a rented minivan into pedestrians near Tiergarten Park, close to the route of Berlin’s annual Pride celebrations, before allegedly launching a knife attack on people nearby. Officials say the assault killed one person and injured at least 29 others, several of whom remain in critical condition. German authorities are treating the incident as an act of Islamist-inspired terrorism.

German prosecutors said the suspect had previously come to the attention of security agencies because of extremist activities and alleged links to Islamist circles. Investigators are examining his online activities, travel history and personal contacts to determine whether anyone assisted in planning or facilitating the attack. So far, authorities say there is no confirmed evidence that a wider terrorist cell was directly involved, although the investigation remains ongoing.

The attack forced organisers to cancel the remainder of Berlin’s Pride festivities and prompted an outpouring of grief across Germany. Mourners have gathered near the scene to lay flowers, candles and rainbow flags in tribute to the victim, while messages of solidarity have poured in from political leaders and LGBTQ+ organisations across Europe.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the violence as an attack on Germany’s open and democratic society, while Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner pledged continued support for victims and their families. Authorities have also announced a review of security arrangements for Pride events and other large public gatherings across the country in response to the incident.

Although the suspect’s death ends the immediate manhunt, investigators say their work is far from over. Forensic experts are examining the suspect’s vehicle, electronic devices and other evidence recovered during the operation as they seek to establish the full sequence of events and any potential extremist connections.
