Multiple regions across Mali were thrown into chaos after heavily armed groups launched coordinated attacks, triggering explosions and prolonged gunfire, according to security sources and local witnesses.

The assaults, which targeted military positions and strategic locations, were reported in several parts of the country, underscoring the growing reach and coordination of insurgent groups linked to extremist networks operating in the Sahel.

Residents described scenes of panic as loud explosions echoed through affected areas, followed by intense exchanges of gunfire between attackers and Malian security forces. In some areas, buildings were damaged, and movement was severely restricted as authorities responded to the violence.

The Malian army confirmed that it had engaged armed fighters in multiple locations and was conducting operations to repel the attacks and secure affected regions. While official casualty figures remain unclear, early reports suggest fatalities and injuries on both sides, as well as among civilians caught in the crossfire.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on jihadist factions affiliated with organizations such as Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara, which have carried out similar large-scale coordinated attacks in Mali and neighboring countries.

Mali has faced persistent insecurity for over a decade, following the fallout from the 2012 Tuareg Rebellion, which created a power vacuum exploited by extremist groups. Despite military interventions and regional efforts, violence has continued to spread, particularly in central and northern regions.

The latest attacks highlight ongoing challenges for Mali’s transitional government and its security forces, as well as concerns about the effectiveness of counterinsurgency efforts in the region.
