An explosion at an oil or natural gas well site in Etoile triggered a massive fire late Monday, sending flames visible for miles and prompting precautionary evacuations in the surrounding area.

Authorities in Nacogdoches County said they received multiple emergency calls following a loud blast at the rural site, located about 20 miles from Nacogdoches and roughly 140 miles northeast of Houston.

Despite the intensity of the blaze, officials confirmed that no injuries were recorded.

Conflicting initial reports identified the site as both an oil and natural gas well. Local authorities later indicated it was likely a gas well, based on information from state safety officials.

Residents in nearby communities were either evacuated or advised to remain indoors as a precaution while emergency teams assessed the situation.

By Tuesday morning, the fire was still burning but had been contained and was not spreading, according to city officials. Air quality monitoring was also underway to ensure there was no threat to public health.

“There is currently no danger to local residents,” officials said, noting that a specialized well control response team had been deployed to extinguish the fire.

The drilling company involved, Helmerich and Payne (H and P), said the cause of the explosion, believed to be a well blowout, remains unknown. The company added that investigations are ongoing and that it is cooperating fully with authorities.

Officials emphasized that there is no indication of a wider risk, although monitoring continues as a precaution.
