Corruption, Religious Division, Weak Patriotism Fuel Nigeria’s Insecurity – Expert

Growing deficiencies in patriotism, religious intolerance, corruption, and declining military morale have been identified as key drivers of Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, with experts calling for a comprehensive national strategy to tackle the root causes of violence and instability across the country.

The concerns were raised by security analyst and Editor-in-Chief of People’s Security Monitor, Isiaka Mustapha, in an analysis of the factors fueling insecurity in Nigeria.

According to him, while military operations and law enforcement interventions remain critical, the country’s security crisis extends far beyond the battlefield and requires societal, institutional, and governance reforms.

Mustapha noted that weak patriotism among citizens and public officials has undermined national unity and collective responsibility, making it more difficult to address threats such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts, and organised crime.

He said many individuals with vital information about criminal activities often refuse to cooperate with security agencies due to a growing sense of disconnection from the state, while others aid criminal elements for personal gain.

“When loyalty to personal interests outweighs commitment to national interest, security challenges become increasingly difficult to confront,” he said.

The security expert also warned that religious discord continues to fuel tensions across the country, creating fertile ground for extremist groups to exploit divisions and recruit followers.

He observed that Nigeria’s religious diversity should be a source of strength but has frequently been manipulated into a source of conflict and mistrust.

According to him, polarisation along religious lines weakens intelligence gathering efforts because security agencies depend heavily on cooperation from local communities.

“Religious intolerance creates opportunities for extremists who exploit faith to justify violence and deepen social divisions,” he stated.

Mustapha further identified corruption as one of the most persistent obstacles to national security, arguing that it weakens institutions, diverts resources, and enables criminal networks to thrive.

He said funds intended for security operations, infrastructure, and community development are often lost through mismanagement and abuse, resulting in inadequate logistics, poor equipment, and reduced operational effectiveness.

“Citizens are less likely to cooperate with institutions they perceive as compromised, creating gaps that criminal organisations readily exploit,” he noted.

The analyst also expressed concern over the welfare and morale of military personnel, stressing that soldiers operating under difficult and dangerous conditions require adequate support to remain effective.

He warned that inadequate welfare packages, delayed benefits, poor equipment, and uncertainty about career prospects could negatively affect motivation and operational performance.

“A demoralised force cannot consistently perform at its optimum level. Military personnel who feel undervalued may struggle to maintain the commitment required in prolonged and complex security operations,” he said.

Mustapha emphasized that patriotism, religious harmony, anti-corruption efforts, and military morale are interconnected factors that collectively influence the nation’s security environment.

To address the situation, he advocated renewed investment in civic and patriotic education, stronger interfaith dialogue initiatives, greater transparency in governance, and improved welfare and equipment for military personnel.

He urged schools, religious institutions, traditional rulers, community leaders, and the media to play active roles in promoting national consciousness and unity.

“Nigeria’s security crisis is not insurmountable. What is required is a coordinated national effort built on integrity, accountability, unity, and a commitment to placing national interest above personal or sectional considerations,” he added.
