Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month final extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, extending his tenure until February 2027.
According to a State House statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the extension follows the earlier approval of Adeniyi’s first tenure extension, which was due to expire on August 1, 2026.
The presidency said the additional six months will enable the Customs chief to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, a key trade facilitation initiative aimed at improving efficiency in import and export processes.
Officials also stated that the extension period will support an orderly transition within the service, including the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of personnel who have reached the mandatory age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi, who joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s, has risen through the ranks over several decades, holding multiple senior positions before being appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023.
His career progression includes appointments as Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
The presidency said the extension reflects confidence in his leadership as the government continues efforts to modernize customs operations and strengthen trade facilitation systems.
