FIFA Lifts Balogun’s World Cup Suspension After Trump Call, Triggering Major Controversy
FIFA has ignited one of the biggest controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after overturning the automatic suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, allowing the team’s leading scorer to play in Monday’s Round of 16 clash against Belgium following direct intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Balogun had received a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 after a VAR review judged his challenge on defender Tarik Muharemović to be serious foul play. Under FIFA regulations, the dismissal carried an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of the knockout tie against Belgium.
However, the situation changed dramatically after Trump personally telephoned FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging football’s governing body to review the decision. According to multiple reports, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later invoked Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, suspending the enforcement of Balogun’s ban for a one-year probationary period rather than cancelling it outright. This means Balogun can play immediately but would serve the suspension if he commits a similar offence within the next year.
The decision has sparked fierce criticism across the football world. The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s ruling and questioned whether the governing body had undermined the integrity of its own disciplinary process. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia mocked the decision, suggesting it resembled an April Fool’s joke rather than a serious sporting ruling. The Belgian federation is reportedly exploring possible legal options, including an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
On the American side, the decision was welcomed by U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino, who maintained that Balogun’s original red card had been excessively harsh. Pochettino said he believed justice had been served while emphasizing that his team had no involvement in the political discussions surrounding the case. U.S. Soccer also expressed satisfaction that the striker would be available for the crucial knockout fixture.
Balogun has been one of the standout performers for the United States during the tournament, scoring three goals and playing a central role in the team’s run to the Round of 16, particularly with captain Christian Pulisic managing injury concerns. His availability is viewed as a major boost as the Americans seek their first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 2002.
The extraordinary reversal has fueled debate about the influence of politics on international sport, with critics arguing that presidential intervention could set an uncomfortable precedent for future FIFA disciplinary decisions. Supporters, however, contend that FIFA simply corrected what many believed was an unjust dismissal by applying an existing provision within its disciplinary code.
