A gas explosion in Calabar South has left dozens of residents injured and several properties destroyed after a fire outbreak erupted during a routine gas transfer operation. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over safety compliance in residential areas.

The explosion occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on March 20 when a gas attendant attempted to transfer gas from a storage tank to a service tank. During the process, a hose reportedly became detached, releasing gas fumes into the surrounding area, which subsequently ignited and triggered a massive fire.

Efforts to contain the situation and secure the storage tank proved unsuccessful, forcing the attendant to flee for safety as the fire intensified. With little time to warn nearby residents, the flames spread rapidly, engulfing surrounding buildings and causing significant damage.

At least 38 people sustained varying degrees of burns in the incident. Those with severe injuries were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.

No fatalities have been recorded as of the time of filing this report, while relevant authorities have launched investigations to determine the cause of the explosion and assess compliance with safety regulations.
