Great-Grandson of Ahmadu Bello Installed as 16th Magajin Garin Sokoto
A prominent gathering of northern elites, traditional rulers, and political figures witnessed the installation of Ahmadu Bello Danbaba as the 16th Magajin Garin Sokoto, a key leadership position within the Sokoto Sultanate Council.

Danbaba, a great-grandson of Ahmadu Bello, was formally crowned following a traditional ceremony that underscored the enduring cultural heritage of the caliphate.
The event followed his earlier turbanning alongside 26 district heads by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
The title of Magajin Gari places Danbaba as a senior council member and third in the leadership hierarchy of the Sokoto Caliphate, a role regarded as highly influential with significant advisory responsibilities to the Sultan.
Speaking after his installation, the new Magajin Gari expressed readiness to shoulder the responsibilities of the office, noting his awareness of the expectations that come with the position.
Dignitaries at the ceremony, including the Wazirin Sokoto, Junaid Wali, Wakilin Sokoto, Bello Muhammadu Maccido, former governor Saminu Turaki, and Islamic leader Shehu Abdulkadir Jelani, offered prayers, counsel, and support to the newly installed council member.
Family representatives, including Mustapha Shehu Malami, also pledged their backing as he assumes office.
The ceremony featured traditional performances and cultural displays, reflecting the rich heritage of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Founded in 1804 by Islamic scholar Usman dan Fodio, the caliphate grew into one of Africa’s largest empires, covering parts of present-day Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon. It became a major centre for Islamic scholarship and trade before its fall to British forces in 1903.
Danbaba reiterated his commitment to upholding the legacy of the caliphate and serving as a principal counsellor to the Sultan, while contributing to the preservation of its traditions and values.
