The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the latest killings in Plateau State, describing the attack on Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area as barbaric and unacceptable.

According to the group, no fewer than 13 persons were reportedly killed by heavily armed attackers during the assault, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA accused both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government of failing to protect residents from recurring attacks across communities in the state.

The association expressed concern over the continued violence in Plateau, stating that repeated attacks on communities have exposed weaknesses in the country’s security architecture.

HURIWA criticised what it described as the Federal Government’s inadequate response to previous killings in Plateau State, alleging that authorities had failed to demonstrate sufficient urgency in addressing the crisis.

The group also faulted Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, claiming the state government had not done enough to safeguard vulnerable communities from armed attacks.

The rights organisation said the recurring violence in Bassa, Barkin Ladi and other affected areas had become a major security emergency that required immediate intervention from security agencies and the Federal Government.

HURIWA called for the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to vulnerable communities across Plateau State, especially in Bassa and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas.

The association further demanded an independent investigation into the attacks and urged security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killings.
