India Says China Ties Are Normalising After High-Level Talks in New Delhi
India and China have taken another step toward repairing relations, with senior officials from both countries holding high-level talks in New Delhi and acknowledging progress toward the gradual normalization of bilateral ties.
Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting hosted by India. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions were “constructive and forward-looking” and focused on recent developments in relations between the two Asian powers.
The Indian foreign ministry said both sides reviewed bilateral engagements and noted progress toward the gradual normalization of ties, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stable, predictable, and constructive relations to build trust and mutual understanding.
Relations between India and China have remained strained since deadly border clashes in the Himalayan region in 2020. However, diplomatic contacts have intensified over the past two years, with both governments seeking to reduce tensions and restore cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Recent agreements on border management and increased diplomatic engagement have contributed to the improving atmosphere.
The meeting took place during the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ gathering in New Delhi, where security officials from member countries discussed regional conflicts, terrorism, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, and other non-traditional security challenges.
China’s foreign ministry had earlier announced Wang’s participation in the event, describing the BRICS platform as an important mechanism for addressing international security challenges and strengthening cooperation among developing nations.
Analysts view the Doval-Wang meeting as another indication that both countries are attempting to stabilize their relationship despite unresolved differences, particularly concerning their disputed border. While significant challenges remain, the latest engagement suggests New Delhi and Beijing are committed to maintaining dialogue and preventing further deterioration in relations.
The talks come at a time of heightened global uncertainty, with BRICS nations increasingly seeking closer coordination on security, economic, and geopolitical issues. Officials from member states are expected to continue discussions ahead of the upcoming BRICS leaders’ summit later this year.
