The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to make the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general election available online, following public concerns over its accessibility and calls for greater transparency in the electoral process.

The decision was contained in a press release dated October 26, 2026, and signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to the commission, the preliminary register will be made available through its dedicated online platform at https://display.inecnigeria.org, in addition to the physical display earlier conducted at registration areas nationwide.

INEC said the physical display took place from October 9 to 15, 2026, in line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026. The exercise was intended to allow registered voters to inspect their details and submit claims or objections as provided by law.

The decision to provide online access follows criticism from Nigerians and electoral stakeholders over the absence of the register from INEC’s website during the scheduled display period. The controversy raised questions about whether voters could adequately verify their details and identify possible omissions or questionable entries.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was among those who called on the commission to publish the register online, arguing that announcing the total number of registered voters was not sufficient to enable citizens to scrutinise individual records. Civil society groups also raised concerns and called for compliance with the legal requirements governing public access to the register.

In its latest statement, INEC said the online publication would complement the physical exercise and facilitate wider public access. The commission added that it was continuing to process claims and objections arising from the exercise ahead of the certification and publication of the final register of voters on December 15, 2026.

The preliminary register is an important part of preparations for the 2027 general election, as it enables voters to check whether their names and personal details have been correctly captured before the register is finalised.

INEC said it appreciated the continued interest and constructive engagement of Nigerians and other stakeholders, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability and the implementation of the Electoral Act 2026.

The commission’s announcement comes amid heightened scrutiny of its preparations for the 2027 elections, with access to the voters’ register emerging as a key issue in public discussions about electoral credibility and confidence.

Although INEC has announced the dedicated online platform, the register’s actual availability should be independently confirmed before publication of any claim that Nigerians can already access and inspect it online.
