The Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the office of the group’s leader and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both previously held by Nnamdi Kanu.

The decision was contained in a statement issued on June 18, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, following a meeting of the full Directorate held on June 17.

According to the statement, the Directorate said the move forms part of ongoing efforts to reposition and strengthen the Biafran self-determination movement and make it more responsive to its stated objectives.

The leadership body reaffirmed that IPOB is a self-determination movement established by Biafrans in the diaspora and maintained that no individual possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the apex institution overseeing the affairs of the movement.

The Directorate also dismissed claims of any dissolution of its leadership structure, describing such assertions as null, void and of no effect.

Explaining its decision, the group said it had reviewed intelligence reports concerning alleged meetings involving Nigerian security and intelligence officials and Nnamdi Kanu during his detention. It expressed concerns over what it described as security risks arising from certain communications linked to the detained separatist leader.

The statement further alleged that some communications had contributed to arrests and deaths of IPOB members in the South-East and warned of plans by unnamed individuals to establish a new militia capable of triggering renewed violence in the region.

As a result, the Directorate announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of the office of the Leader of IPOB and the position of Director of Radio Biafra until further notice.

The group stressed that its pursuit of self-determination remains peaceful and non-violent, adding that its objectives should never be used to justify actions that could result in hardship, violence or loss of life among the people it seeks to represent.

The Directorate stated that the suspension was also intended to prevent individuals or groups from committing crimes or carrying out unauthorized activities while claiming to act under the authority of the suspended office.

It added that any criminal activity conducted in the name of the suspended office would not be attributed to IPOB but solely to those responsible for such actions.

The development marks a significant shift within the leadership structure of IPOB and is likely to generate reactions among supporters of the movement, observers and stakeholders following developments surrounding the Biafran self-determination campaign.
