Hundreds of passengers were left stranded Monday morning after two trains collided on the Kaduna–Abuja rail line, prompting authorities to suspend operations.

The incident, which occurred during peak hours, has raised concerns over safety protocols and signaling systems on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes. Reports indicate that the train departed Kaduna as scheduled but later collided with another train on the same track. It remains unclear whether the other train was stationary or moving.

Witnesses described the collision as sudden and violent, bringing both trains to an abrupt halt.

“We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked,” one passenger posted on social media. “We later realized we had hit another train. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official information.”

Another passenger, Sada Malumfashi, said the impact caused passengers to lose balance.

“The train jolted violently, throwing people across the cabin. Some passengers sustained serious injuries and were bleeding,” he said.

Passengers reported a 30-minute delay before the train continued toward Kubwa, with no communication from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

The NRC has not yet released an official casualty figure. Early reports suggest significant damage to the front sections of the trains, but no confirmed fatalities have been reported so far. Emergency responders and security personnel have been deployed to assist passengers and secure the site.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision and have called for a review of safety and signaling measures to prevent future accidents.
