Kwara Orders Immediate Demolition of Unsafe Two-Storey Building in Ilorin

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate demolition of a two-storey building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area after declaring it structurally unsafe and a threat to lives and property.

The directive was issued through the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), which sealed the building following complaints from residents over fears that the structure could collapse.

In a statement by KWEPA’s Press Secretary, Aliyu Amode, the agency said it carried out an emergency inspection after receiving distress calls from members of the community warning about the deteriorating condition of the building.

According to the statement, residents disclosed that they had repeatedly alerted the property owner to the structural defects and urged him to undertake repairs, but the warnings were allegedly ignored.

Speaking after the inspection, KWEPA General Manager, Jide Aina, described the building as a serious danger to public safety and directed the owner to commence its immediate demolition.

“The condition of the building constitutes a grave danger to public safety. The owner is hereby directed to commence its immediate demolition,” Aina said.

He warned that if the owner failed to comply with the directive, the state government would proceed with the demolition to safeguard lives and property.

Aina reiterated the government’s commitment to preventing avoidable disasters through proactive environmental enforcement and strict compliance with urban safety regulations.

He also urged residents to continue reporting abandoned buildings, distressed structures and other environmental hazards to KWEPA for prompt intervention, stressing that public cooperation remains vital to ensuring a safe environment across the state.
