The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to broadcasters across Nigeria, raising concerns over what it described as a sustained increase in violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in news, current affairs, and political programmes.

In a press release dated April 17, 2026, the Commission said broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that depart from their core responsibility to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism.

The NBC warned that as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, it will enforce strict compliance with all provisions of the broadcasting code, particularly those relating to fairness, balance, hate speech, incitement, and respect for constitutional authorities.

Rising Concerns Over Professional Standards

The Commission highlighted what it termed a “disturbing departure” from established principles of broadcast journalism, especially among programme anchors and presenters. It cited violations of ethical standards, including the expression of personal opinions as facts during broadcasts.

According to the NBC, presenters are required to maintain neutrality at all times, in line with Section 1.10.3 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which prohibits broadcasters from allowing presenters to inject personal opinions into programmes.

Misuse of Broadcast Platforms

The Commission also expressed concern over the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, noting a growing trend of using the media to disseminate content that could incite public disorder or undermine national unity.

It referenced several sections of the broadcasting code that prohibit:

the promotion of hate speech, inflammatory or divisive content,

incitement to crime or public disorder,

dissemination of materials that undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty or unity.

The NBC stressed that broadcasters must ensure all sides of an issue are fairly represented and, where possible, presented within the same programme to guarantee balance.

Sanctions for Violations

The regulatory body warned that any anchor or presenter found to have:

expressed personal opinion as fact,

bullied or intimidated guests,

denied fair hearing to opposing views, or

compromised neutrality,

would face sanctions in line with the provisions of the broadcasting code.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding professional standards in the industry and ensuring that broadcasting remains a tool for national cohesion rather than division.

The NBC urged all broadcasters and stakeholders to adhere strictly to the code, emphasizing that compliance is critical to maintaining public trust and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process.
