Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have dismantled a large-scale methamphetamine production laboratory hidden inside a forest in Oyo State, arresting a Mexican national believed to be a key expert in the illicit drug operation.

The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Jose Villa Ochoa, was arrested alongside four Nigerian accomplices during a coordinated raid on a clandestine drug manufacturing facility located in Tapa village, Oyo State.

The discovery marks one of the most significant breakthroughs in Nigeria’s fight against synthetic drug production and comes barely a month after another major methamphetamine laboratory was uncovered in neighbouring Ogun State.

NDLEA said the facility operated as a sophisticated industrial-scale production centre capable of manufacturing methamphetamine worth billions of naira for distribution within Nigeria and across international drug trafficking networks.

Speaking on the operation, Chairman of the NDLEA, , described the arrest as evidence of the growing involvement of international criminal syndicates in Nigeria’s illicit drug trade.

According to the agency, tactical operatives stormed the heavily concealed camp on June 17, 2026, following intelligence reports linking the location to a transnational drug cartel.

Investigators believe Ochoa was brought into the country specifically to provide technical expertise for the large-scale synthesis and production of methamphetamine.

“The arrest of a foreign cartel specialist on Nigerian soil underscores the transnational nature of this threat,” Marwa said in a statement delivered through NDLEA spokesman, .

“They thought hiding in dense forests would shield them from the long arm of the law. They were wrong.”

A follow-up forensic operation conducted on June 18 uncovered an extensive collection of industrial-grade equipment used in the manufacture of synthetic drugs.

Among the items recovered were specialized reactor pots, industrial mixers, distillation units and rapid vegetable dehydrators believed to have been used in drying methamphetamine crystals.

Officials also seized large quantities of controlled precursor chemicals, including Phenyl-2-Propanone (P2P), caustic soda and several hundred litres of substances that tested positive for methamphetamine.

The NDLEA said all hazardous materials recovered from the site have been safely evacuated and secured as evidence for prosecution.

Security experts have increasingly raised concerns about the emergence of forest-based drug laboratories in Nigeria, warning that criminal networks are exploiting remote locations to evade detection while expanding synthetic drug production.

The agency warned that international drug cartels appear to be intensifying efforts to establish southwestern Nigeria as a regional hub for the manufacture and distribution of synthetic narcotics.

Marwa vowed that the agency would continue to target and dismantle such operations wherever they are found.

“Let the message go out clearly to all drug cartels, domestic and international, that Nigeria is not, and will never be, a safe haven for your illicit trade,” he said.

“We will find you in the cities, we will track you into the forests, and we will dismantle your infrastructure of death.”

The suspects are expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations, while authorities continue efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the international network linked to the operation.
