The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality and accessible healthcare services to residents with the unveiling of newly remodelled medical facilities in Minna.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the pledge while commissioning the upgraded infrastructure at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital (IBB Specialist Hospital), describing the development as a major step toward elevating tertiary healthcare delivery in the state to global standards.

The newly commissioned facilities include 60-bed porta cabins, a fully equipped Accident and Emergency Unit, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a modern radio-diagnostic suite fitted with advanced equipment such as a mammogram, MRI, CT scan, X-ray machines and other specialised scanning rooms.

Governor Bago said the upgrades underscore his administration’s strategic investment in the health sector under the New Niger Agenda.

“These investments are not just about infrastructure but about saving lives by providing quality healthcare services to our people,” he said.

The governor reiterated his administration’s determination to ensure that quality healthcare remains accessible to every resident of the state. He also commended development partners, the Commissioner for Health, and the management and staff of the hospital for their contributions to the transformation. He urged them to prioritise proper maintenance of the facilities to sustain optimal service delivery.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Murtala Mohammed Bagana, said the remodelled facilities would significantly curb medical tourism by providing advanced healthcare services within the state.

Bagana disclosed that the hospital would now offer subspecialty services in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonology, family medicine and anaesthesiology.

He added that the hospital has expanded its capacity to handle complex surgical procedures, including neurosurgery of the brain and spine, total knee replacement, advanced orthopaedic surgeries, maxillofacial surgery, burns and plastic surgery, ENT procedures, paediatric surgery — including correction of anorectal malformations — as well as complex general and urological surgeries.

According to him, the facilities can also serve as a temporary site for the IBB University Teaching Hospital to support the training of clinical students, resident doctors and other healthcare professionals, in addition to academic research.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Bala Waziri, described the development as a significant milestone for the state’s health sector. He noted that the expanded facilities would boost admission capacity, reduce congestion, and minimise referrals to hospitals outside the state and the country.

Waziri further commended Governor Bago for facilitating the engagement of 20 visiting consultants currently working alongside resident doctors and the hospital’s medical team to strengthen service delivery. He assured that the facilities would be properly utilised and maintained.
