The Federal Government has expressed grief over a deadly fireworks explosion in China that killed at least 21 people and left several others injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the Chinese government and the families of the victims.

The explosion occurred in Liuyang City, a major hub for fireworks production, at the Huasheng Fireworks facility. The blast caused widespread destruction in surrounding areas, forcing evacuations and displacing residents.

Chinese authorities were reported to have launched immediate rescue and containment operations, deploying emergency personnel to search for survivors, treat the injured, and prevent further escalation.

Nigeria commended the swift response of emergency services, noting that their actions helped reduce the impact of the disaster.

“The Government and people of Nigeria extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the injured, and all those affected by this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

The Federal Government also expressed solidarity with China during the period of mourning and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.

It added that Nigeria stands with Chinese authorities as recovery and rehabilitation efforts continue following the explosion.
