The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has inaugurated a Research, Training and Publications Committee aimed at strengthening journalism practice and bridging the gap between academic training and professional newsroom realities in Nigeria.

The committee is chaired by Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Paul University, Awka, includes seasoned media professionals such as Dr. Tony Onyima, former Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun; Ms. Angela Agoawike, Founder/CEO of Omalicha FM; Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, Senior Editor at THISDAY; and Dr. Kabir Alabi Garba, Weekend Editor at The Guardian.

Speaking at the inauguration held at Editors’ House, Ikeja, Lagos, NGE President Eze Anaba said the committee’s work would combine academic insight with industry experience to promote knowledge, skills, and best practices in journalism. “The membership of the committee was carefully selected to bridge the gap between the town and gown,” he said.

The panel is expected to conduct research, organize training programs, and publish books, journals, and online content to advance excellence, innovation, and professionalism in Nigerian media.

Prof. Okunna described the initiative as “timely and significant,” adding that the committee’s expertise would add “considerable value to the Guild and the wider media industry.”

The committee will serve a two-year term, with the mandate to help Nigerian journalists stay informed, skilled, and responsive to emerging trends in media practice.
