Nigeria’s prominent figures have paid tribute to Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor with Arise News Media, who tragically lost her life on Monday in Abuja. Sommie, as she was fondly called, jumped from the balcony of her Katampe residence in a desperate bid to escape suspected armed robbers.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu described Maduagwu as “one of the nation’s young and brilliant minds in the journalism profession”, expressing sorrow that her life was “cut short in her prime”. In her condolence message, she extended sympathies to Arise News Media Chairman Chief Nduka Obaigbena, Somtochukwu’s family, friends and colleagues, hoping “the perpetrators are apprehended as soon as possible and brought to book”. The First Lady prayed “God grant repose to the soul of the deceased and gives her family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss”.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed deep sadness over the incident, stating “I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise TV newscaster who was killed in an armed robbery attack in Abuja”. Atiku extended condolences to Arise News management and staff, praying “the family, friends and colleagues be comforted by this loss at such a very young age”.

2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi hailed Maduagwu as “a brilliant young anchor and trained lawyer whose voice engaged, informed, and inspired many”. Obi noted her passing was “not just a personal loss to her family and colleagues but a huge blow to journalism and to our nation”. He stressed citizens’ safety must be prioritised, saying “No Nigerian should go to bed fearful of what the night may bring, or lose their life in such senseless ways”. Obi conveyed thoughts and prayers to Sommie’s grieving family, Arise News, and all mourning her, stating “May her soul rest in peace, and may we, as a nation, work harder to build a country where lives are valued and protected”.
