Repatriation Begins as Nigerians Evacuated From South Africa Set to Return
The Federal Government has announced that the first batch of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday as part of ongoing efforts to assist citizens affected by recent developments in the country.
According to official sources, arrangements have been concluded for the safe return of the evacuees, who were assisted by Nigerian diplomatic missions in coordination with South African authorities and relevant international partners.
The evacuation exercise follows concerns over the safety and welfare of Nigerians residing in South Africa, prompting government intervention to facilitate voluntary return for those who expressed interest in coming back home.
Officials say the returning citizens will be received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where relevant agencies including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Immigration Service, and health authorities are expected to conduct standard reception procedures.
Upon arrival, evacuees are expected to undergo medical screening and documentation checks before being transported to designated reception centres for further assistance and profiling.
Government representatives have reiterated their commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad and ensuring that citizens in distressing situations receive adequate support and safe passage back home when necessary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that further batches may follow depending on ongoing assessments and the number of citizens who opt for evacuation.
Authorities have also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm and cooperate with diplomatic missions as efforts continue to monitor the situation and provide consular assistance where needed.
The evacuation marks one of the latest coordinated repatriation efforts by the Federal Government in response to security and humanitarian concerns affecting Nigerian nationals abroad.
