Cape Verde, making its World Cup debut, pulled off one of the biggest shocks in tournament history by holding European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in Atlanta on Monday. The tiny island nation with a population under 500,000 defied all expectations against one of the pre-tournament favorites.

Spain dominated possession with 74 percent and unleashed 27 shots, but they could not break down a resolute Cape Verde defense. The hero of the match was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced a string of world-class saves to deny Ferran Torres, Pedri, and Aymeric Laporte. Torres also struck the crossbar shortly before halftime in Spain’s closest effort.

Cape Verde center-back Pico Lopes, who plays for Irish club Shamrock Rovers, made a crucial goal-line tackle in the 88th minute to deny Mikel Oyarzabal a certain goal. “To get a point and a clean sheet in our first game in a World Cup against a team like Spain was amazing,” Lopes said. “It’s history for us”.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente had warned before the match that Cape Verde could be a surprise team. “We should have won today’s match with everything that happened, but we lacked freshness and a clinical edge,” he said after the game . Spain midfielder Rodri added, “It’s about fine-tuning those chances because against a team that sits back so much you’re not going to have many”.

Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitão Brito described the result as proof of his country’s resilience. “We have shown organization and braveness and this is proof of what our country is about,” he said . The Blue Sharks even had a late chance to win through Diney Borges, but his header was saved by Unai Simon.

Back in Cape Verde, streets erupted in celebration at the final whistle. “Being a small country and being able to achieve such a good result against Spain, a football powerhouse, is the greatest feeling ever,” said supporter Isa Conceição from the capital Praia. Another fan described the performance with pride: “We always do the impossible. That’s our people”.

Cape Verde became the third-smallest nation by population to qualify for the World Cup, and their result rebuked criticism that the expanded 48-team tournament would dilute quality . Spain now faces Saudi Arabia while Cape Verde takes on Uruguay in their remaining Group H fixtures.
