The Transmission Company of Nigeria (Transmission Company of Nigeria) has commissioned the newly completed Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In Turn-Out transmission lines at the Ihovbor Transmission Substation in Edo State, marking a major expansion of Nigeria’s electricity evacuation capacity.

The commissioning ceremony, held on May 14, 2026, was described by the Managing Director/CEO of TCN, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, as a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s transmission infrastructure and improving grid reliability.

Improved Grid Flexibility and Power Evacuation

According to Abdulaziz, the 14-kilometre double-circuit line connects the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission route to the Ihovbor substation, creating two additional pathways that enhance operational flexibility within the Benin corridor.

He explained that the upgrade improves TCN’s ability to evacuate power from major generation sources, including the Azura power plant and facilities operated by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), while also reducing transmission bottlenecks.

The project is expected to add about 600MW of wheeling capacity, increasing the volume of bulk electricity available to distribution companies for residential and industrial use nationwide.

Contractors and Technical Details

The project contractor, Energo Nigeria, said the transmission line consists of 30 towers and twin Bison conductors capable of supporting up to 1.5GW of power flow from key generation plants.

Company representative Predrag Mihel credited the completion of the project to strong collaboration between TCN and the contractor team .

Project Delays and Resolution

Speaking at the event, TCN’s General Manager (Engineering), Engr. Mojid Akintola, noted that the project was initially awarded in 2017 but experienced delays due to right-of-way and funding challenges, which have now been resolved.

He commended all stakeholders involved in delivering the project, including the host community and contractors.

Clarification on TCN’s Role

The General Manager of the Benin Region, Engr. Charles Iwuamadi, reiterated that TCN serves strictly as a bulk electricity transporter and does not distribute electricity directly to end users. He emphasized that distribution companies are responsible for delivering electricity to consumers.

Community Response

Representing the Ihovbor/Evbueka community, Mr. Elliot Imafido welcomed the project but urged TCN to prioritize local employment opportunities and improve electricity supply to host communities.

The commissioning is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission backbone and support ongoing efforts to stabilize power supply across the country.
