The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully carried out live-line maintenance on the Zaria–Funtua 132kV transmission line without disrupting bulk power supply, in a move aimed at strengthening the reliability of the national grid.

The maintenance exercise, undertaken by the Kaduna Region Live-Line Crew, lasted from July 4 to July 7, 2026, and involved replacing damaged glass disc insulators on key transmission towers while the line remained fully energized.

According to TCN, the exercise covered towers T14, T17, T40, T63, T78, T175, T177 and T178, where deteriorated glass disc insulators were replaced with a combination of polymer and glass disc insulators to improve the performance and durability of the transmission infrastructure.

The company explained that executing the repairs under live-line conditions eliminated the need for a scheduled power outage, allowing uninterrupted transmission of electricity throughout the maintenance period.

The successful operation, TCN said, reflects the growing expertise of its technical personnel in deploying modern maintenance techniques that enable critical repairs to be carried out safely without affecting electricity supply.

It added that the replacement of the faulty insulators will strengthen the insulation strings, reduce the likelihood of transmission faults, and enhance the operational reliability of the Zaria–Funtua 132kV line.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a resilient and efficient transmission network through proactive maintenance and the adoption of advanced engineering solutions aimed at improving power delivery nationwide.
