President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as a trusted ally, brother, friend and one of the architects of progressive politics in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, President Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over Oseni’s death, saying the late politician played a pivotal role in his political journey and remained one of his closest associates throughout decades of public service and democratic activism.

The President described Oseni as a visionary administrator, elder statesman, progressive politician and trailblazer whose leadership, commitment and determination distinguished him throughout his career.

According to Tinubu, Oseni made significant contributions to the development of Lagos State, particularly during the Second Republic when he served as Organising Secretary of the Unity Party of Nigeria in Lagos under the leadership of Obafemi Awolowo. The President noted that Oseni was instrumental in laying the foundation for several institutions, including the Lagos State Printing Corporation, where a central mosque was recently dedicated in his honour.

Beyond his public accomplishments, Tinubu emphasized the personal bond they shared, revealing that Oseni played a crucial role in bringing him into politics and supporting his rise to become a senator representing Lagos West and later governor of Lagos State.

The President recalled their years of political struggle, particularly during Nigeria’s fight to restore democratic rule. He praised Oseni’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and good governance, describing him as a steadfast advocate for freedom and constitutional governance.

Tinubu said they stood together in defending the mandate of the historic June 12 Presidential Election, won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, and jointly participated in efforts to end military rule in Nigeria.

Reflecting on more recent years, the President disclosed that Oseni had blessed and prayed for his presidential ambition when he declared his intention to contest the 2023 election, although age and relocation to the United States limited his direct involvement in the campaign.

Tinubu also stated that some of the reforms and policy ideas being implemented by his administration were discussed with Oseni over the years, adding that he remains committed to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.

Describing the late statesman as “an Iroko among us,” the President said Oseni’s passing represents the loss of a dependable ally and one of the country’s respected political figures.

He expressed gratitude for Oseni’s service to Lagos State and Nigeria, praising his dedication to public service and his enduring contributions to democratic development.

President Tinubu further extended condolences to Oseni’s family, praying for strength and comfort for his wife, children and loved ones as they mourn his passing.

Concluding the tribute, the President and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu prayed for the repose of Oseni’s soul and asked Allah to grant him Aljanna Firdaus, the highest place in Paradise.

The late Alhaji Kola Oseni is remembered as one of the influential figures in Nigeria’s progressive political movement and a key participant in the struggle for democracy whose legacy continues to resonate within the country’s political landscape.
