Troops Foil Terrorists’ Kidnap Attempts, Rescue 22 Victims in Sokoto Operations
Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 22 kidnapped victims in separate counter-terrorism operations in Sokoto State, thwarting attempts by armed terrorists to abduct civilians along major routes and farming communities.
The successful operations, carried out on June 18, 2026, took place in Sabon Birni and Isa Local Government Areas and underscored the military’s intensified efforts to combat insecurity and protect vulnerable communities across the North-West.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the first rescue mission was launched after troops received credible intelligence that terrorists had blocked the Sabon Birni–Shinkafi Road near Kura Mota Village and attacked two civilian vehicles.
The attackers reportedly abducted several passengers during the assault and killed one civilian.
“Troops immediately mobilised to the scene and launched a coordinated pursuit operation supported by aerial surveillance,” the statement said.
The military pressure forced the terrorists to abandon their captives and flee into nearby hideouts, leading to the rescue of 17 kidnapped passengers. The victims were subsequently handed over to relevant authorities for further assistance.
In a separate incident on the same day, troops responded to a distress call from Chohi Village, where terrorists had attempted to kidnap farmers working on their farmlands.
Security forces swiftly deployed to the area and pursued the attackers along their withdrawal route. The operation resulted in the rescue of five abducted farmers, who were later reunited with their families.
Following the successful rescues, troops conducted confidence-building patrols in neighbouring communities, including Gidan Rana and Gidan Sale villages, to reassure residents and maintain a strong security presence.
Military authorities said the operations reflect the determination of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to deny terrorists freedom of movement and ensure the safety of residents in affected communities.
“The successful rescue operations underscore the unwavering commitment of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to protecting lives and property, safeguarding vulnerable communities, and creating a secure environment for citizens to pursue their lawful activities without fear,” the statement added.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA has intensified offensive and intelligence-driven operations across the North-West in recent months as security forces continue efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and restore peace to affected communities.
