A growing body of investigations and policy actions suggests that Donald Trump and his administration are pursuing a wide-ranging effort to expand federal influence over U.S. elections; traditionally controlled by individual states, sparking concern among election officials and legal experts.

A recent investigation by Reuters found that federal authorities have launched probes or interventions in multiple states, including: Ohio, Georgia, Colorado, Nevada, and Missouri. In several cases, federal agents reportedly sought access to voter records, election equipment, or ongoing state-level election processes, actions described by local officials as unusual and unprecedented.

The effort appears to be part of a broader campaign framed around “election integrity,” with agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security playing a more visible role in election-related activities, despite historically limited involvement in state-run voting systems.

In parallel, Trump has publicly advocated for stronger federal control over elections, including proposals to “nationalize” voting systems and impose stricter voter identification requirements. Critics argue that such moves could undermine the constitutional framework that grants states primary authority over elections.

Legislative efforts have also emerged, including proposals that would require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Supporters say the measures are aimed at preventing fraud, while voting rights advocates warn they could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters who lack documentation.

At the state level, political battles over redistricting are intensifying ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Both Republican- and Democratic-led states are attempting to redraw congressional maps to gain political advantage, a process critics say risks further politicizing electoral systems.

Meanwhile, public opinion remains deeply divided. A recent poll found that a large majority of Republican voters believe claims of widespread election fraud, despite a lack of evidence, highlighting the growing distrust surrounding the U.S. electoral process.

Some lawmakers and analysts warn that the combination of federal interventions, legislative changes, and political messaging could reshape how elections are conducted across the country, potentially affecting voter confidence and the integrity of upcoming elections.

However, supporters of Trump’s approach argue that tighter controls are necessary to restore trust in the system and prevent irregularities.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the struggle over control of U.S. elections at both the federal and state levels is expected to remain a central political battleground.
