U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a newly converted Air Force One aircraft, a Boeing 747 previously used by the Qatari government, marking a significant addition to the presidential fleet amid ongoing delays to the long-awaited replacement aircraft being built by Boeing.

The aircraft, which was donated by Qatar and subsequently modified to meet U.S. presidential transport requirements, was presented during a ceremony attended by senior administration officials and military personnel. Trump praised the aircraft as a cost-effective solution that would help modernize presidential travel while the United States awaits the delivery of next-generation Air Force One jets.

The unveiling comes after months of political debate surrounding the acceptance of the luxury aircraft from Qatar. Critics had questioned whether accepting the plane could raise ethical and security concerns, while supporters argued that the aircraft would save taxpayers money and provide a temporary solution to the delays affecting Boeing’s Air Force One program.

According to U.S. officials, the aircraft underwent extensive modifications to improve communications systems, security features and operational capabilities required for presidential transport. However, it is not expected to completely replace the highly specialized Air Force One aircraft currently in service but rather complement the existing fleet.

Trump defended the decision to accept the aircraft, describing it as a practical arrangement that benefits the United States. He dismissed criticism from opponents, insisting that the jet was being used in the national interest and would strengthen presidential mobility.

The Boeing 747 originally served as part of Qatar’s government transport fleet and is known for its luxurious interior. The conversion process involved adapting the aircraft to meet American military and security standards before it could be integrated into presidential operations.

The unveiling comes as Boeing continues work on two new Air Force One aircraft commissioned to replace the aging VC-25A planes that have transported U.S. presidents for more than three decades. The project has faced repeated delays and rising costs, pushing delivery dates further into the future.

The new aircraft is expected to enter service following final testing and certification procedures, providing the White House with additional transport capacity while longer-term modernization efforts continue.

Air Force One is the official call sign used for any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States.
