Two Killed in Utah BASE Jump Tragedy, Including Athlete Who Performed with Madonna
Two people have died following a tragic tandem BASE jumping accident in a remote canyon in Utah, including renowned extreme sports athlete Andy Lewis, who gained international recognition after performing alongside Madonna during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show.
Authorities in Grand County, Utah, said emergency responders were dispatched on Sunday to Mineral Bottom, a rugged desert area near the Utah-Colorado border, after receiving reports of injuries during a BASE jumping attempt. Rescue teams, emergency medical personnel, and helicopters were deployed to the scene, but both victims were pronounced dead.
Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins confirmed that one of the victims was Andy Lewis, a prominent figure in the extreme sports community. The second victim was identified as Danny Joe Kregle, an Arizona businessman, father, and grandfather who was reportedly participating in the tandem jump with Lewis.
Investigators said the pair were conducting a tandem BASE jump, a practice in which an experienced jumper is harnessed to another participant and both descend using a single parachute system. Authorities have not yet released a formal accident report, though local officials confirmed the incident occurred during the jump.
Lewis, widely known by the nickname “Sketchy Andy,” was considered one of the most accomplished athletes in the world of slacklining, tricklining, and BASE jumping. He rose to international fame after performing acrobatic slackline stunts during Madonna’s halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.
Beyond his Super Bowl appearance, Lewis was a four-time world champion in competitive slacklining and held several records, including a Guinness World Record for slackline surfing above China’s Diaoshuilou Waterfall. He also gained recognition for completing daring highline walks and pioneering modern tricklining techniques.
Lewis owned and operated BASE Jump Moab, a company that offered tandem BASE jumping experiences in Utah. Friends and fellow athletes described him as one of the sport’s most influential figures, known for pushing the limits of what was considered possible in extreme sports.
The tragedy has reignited discussions about the risks associated with BASE jumping, one of the world’s most dangerous aerial sports. Studies have previously suggested that BASE jumping carries a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death than traditional skydiving, while tandem BASE jumping remains a particularly controversial practice within the community.
Tributes have poured in from athletes, friends, and fans across the globe, many remembering Lewis for his fearless approach to adventure and his contributions to extreme sports. Authorities said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
